Call for Young Researchers' papers

In the course of the 7th WAPOR Latin American conference in Monterrey, Mexico (12-14 October 2016), The Young Researchers on Public Opinion Day will take place on October 12th.

The meeting aims to bring together students (at both undergraduate and postgraduate level) who wish to present research papers in areas such as public opinion, political science, sociology, economy, psychology and policy.

The best paper presented in the conference will be awarded with the Marcus Figueiredo Public Opinion Prize for Young Researchers. The prize will be given by an international jury.

To participate in the meeting, interested researchers should send a paper and then present it in the conference itself. Research related to the central topics of the Conference are particularly welcome, as are those on other traditional problems of the discipline, including:

  • Political participation
  • Polarization
  • Civic culture
  • Theory of public opinion
  • Participation and new media
  • Media effects
  • Audience fragmentation
  • Surveys and experimental methodologies
  • Qualitative methodologies (focus group, in-depth interviews, case studies, panel studies, etc)
  • Electoral studies

Submissions:

  1. Paper Summary. Authors should present original research with a summary that includes the following elements: title and general description of the paper. This description should include: approach to the topic, hypothesis or research questions, methodology, and results. In a separate document the author should send the title of the research and his or her contact information. Maximum length: 300 words. There is a limit of one proposal per student. Deadline: 29th Abril 2016.

  2. Notification of results: Results will be notified on the 16th May 2016 and each student will be informed of whether the summary was accepted.

  3. Submission of final papers: The final papers (maximum 25 pages, double spaced, and including the following sections: theoretical framework, research question(s), methodology, results and conclusions) should be sent until the 31th of August 2016. Together with the papers, the authors should state that they want their paper to participate in the Marcus Figueiredo Prize and, therefore, it should be sent to the jury.

  4. Paper presentations. On 12th of October 2016, in a special session of the 7th WAPOR Latin American Conference, each author should present their final paper.

  5. Inscription: Inscription to participated in the Meeting of Young Researchers will have a cots of 30 US$ for undergraduates and 50 US$ for postgraduate students (until 31th August 2016) and of 60 US$ for undergraduates and 100 US$ for posgtgraduate students (as of 1st September 2016). Registration in the Meeting of Young Researchers includes inscription for all of the academic events of the 7th WAPOR Latin American Conference (some social events of the 7th Conference will not be available under this type of inscription).

Marcus Figueiredo Prize:

The Marcus Figueiredo prize pays tribute to this Brazilian researcher, acknowledging his commitment with the formation of Political Scientists in the area of public opinion. The "Grupo Opinião Pública" of the Universidad Federal de Minas Gerais, will award the Marcus Figueiredo Prize to the best paper presented at the Meeting of Young Researchers in Public Opinion in the framework of the 7th WAPOR Latin American Conference. The prize is a tribute to this Brazilian researcher for his commitment to the formation of Brazilian political scientists in the area of public opinion, political communication, electoral behaviour, and elections.

The Associação Brasileira de Empresas de Pesquisa (ABEP) will support the prize, offering a Methodology Course (the prize does not include transport or accommodation) and the publication of the winning article in the Revista Brasileira de Pesquisas de Marketing, Opinião e Mídia (PMKT).
